Adapted from the book of Daniels (2004), Henderson’s definition of nursing is stated as: â€Å"The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge. The author wants to become a nurse because of the calling to serve and care for other people. She wanted to make a difference by creating a significant impact on patients’ lives and be remembered as a nurse who cared for them with passion. The author believes that this significant impact can be achieved through a holistic, patient-centered and passionate care. The author reflects and would like to live up to her personal and societal life values including human dignity, integrity, autonomy, altruism, and social justice. The author would like to be remembered as a nurse with a commitment to patients and community, a nurse who follows the footsteps of Virginia Henderson. Above all, the author values social justice or the fair and equitable allocation of resources. The author highly feels that this should be the most lived up values because quality care must be provided to all needing population regardless of who they are and what are their status in life and nurses are fully responsible for doing all the efforts to lead the patient to recovery and independence.
